Draft Policy
The Boys and Girls Club believes that its basketball program should, and will operate for the benefit of the participant. It is our goal to operate athletic leagues that are fair to each department. The best way to be fair is to have an honest draft that will have the well-being of the players foremost in mind.
1. Drafting Sequence
a. All players participating in each respective league will be entered into a draft.
b. It will be a snake draft. (Top to bottom and then bottom to top. Ex. 1-6 then 6-1)
c. Coach’s kids will be locked for the first two rounds of their grades draft.
The Head Coach must select their child as the second pick of their age group. The Assistant Coach must select their child as the first pick of their age group.
d. Drafts will be conducted by grade order. For example, all 5th graders will be drafted
before any 4th graders can be drafted.
e. All siblings in same division must be drafted on the same team. If you select one sibling then the other must be selected in the following available round.
2. Late Registration
a. The names of ALL players who register after the deadline will be placed in a hat and drawn by the teams after the draft is completed. The team that would have been next in the draft will pull first and the names will continue to be pulled in the same drafting sequence.
b. Players who register after the draft date will be placed on a team by the League Commissioner in the sequence of the draft and with consideration to the number of players on each team.
3. All eligible players will be selected.
4. Protecting Players
a. Intent
It is the position of the Boys and Girls Club that the perfect draft would have all players eligible to be drafted by the first team that wanted them. Actually, protected players distort a fair and open draft. However, the Boys and Girls Club recognizes that parents want to coach their own children. In order to make this possible, we allow for the protection of the Head Coach and one Assitant Coaches child in the draft.
5. Draft Day
a. Assigned coaches ONLY, will be allowed to draft for their respective teams.
b. Available adults will draft for teams without coaches.
c. Children and non-participants will not be allowed in the drafting room.
d. The results of the draft are FINAL.
